On this day:
New style vehicle plates to improve safety
Kirklees taxis will have new style vehicle plates and they are to be used in a bid to increase safety. The new plates will be appearing over the next 12 months on every taxi in the area.
They will be placed near the rear bumper and they will display new detailed information including the make and colour of the vehicle, the number of passengers it can carry and the expiry date of the licence.
The plates that are currently being used on the vehicle only show the vehicle licence number but the new plates should help people identify a taxi more easily in the dark and bad weather conditions.
There are currently more than 1,500 private hire vehicles in Kirklees, along with 213 licensed hackney carriages.
In-car licence discs also have a new look.
Cabinet member for transport Peter McBride, said: “These changes, which were made after consultation with the police and the taxi trade, are all about improving safety.”
“It is important that everyone can identify taxis at a glance so that people don’t compromise their security.”
